UltraTrak™ RM4000 Employs SCSI-to-ATA Technology to Provide Scalable External Storage for Ultra ATA Drives

MILPITAS, Calif. - October 16, 2002 - Promise Technology, Inc., originator and global leader in ATA RAID data protection and storage solutions, today introduced UltraTrak™ RM4000, a low-cost rackmount ATA RAID storage subsystem designed to provide maximum economy along with reliability, capacity and data redundancy all in a compact 1U high enclosure.

The unit can house up to four off-the-shelf Ultra ATA drives to create RAID 5, 0+1, 1, 0, or JBOD - allowing business professionals, MIS administrators, and corporate IT users to achieve price differences greater than three-to-one when compared with similar SCSI RAID subsystems.

"UltraTrak RM4000 is the latest Promise product to incorporate the simplicity and power of ATA-based technology into a low-cost, powerful hardware RAID solution. Without sacrificing budgets, we're delivering continuous, reliable handling of critical data for applications such as email, Web hosts, video surveillance, medical imaging or desktop publishing," said Sam Sirisena, vice president of sales and marketing worldwide, Promise Technology, Inc. "Promise pioneered the ATA RAID concept - and now it's gaining broad market recognition for delivering top performance at significantly lower costs than its traditional SCSI RAID counterparts."

UltraTrak RM4000 uses an Ultra160 SCSI interface and attaches to the PC or server using a standard SCSI adapter. Once configured, it appears to the server as a single standard SCSI drive - protecting data and keeping it accessible in the event of a drive failure.

Set up, monitoring and management is simple and can be handled through any of three methods - a push-button LCD panel; command line interface (CLI) using a terminal emulation program; or through Promise Array Management (PAM) software. PAM allows remote access and monitoring from Windows PCs to any UltraTrak array on the user's TCP/IP-based network.

UltraTrak RM4000 also includes online array expansion and conversion, and hot swap functions that allow replacement of a failed drive without shutting down the system. Large LBA mode support lets it recognize and use full drive capacities greater than 137GB - for example, allowing users to configure arrays as large as 800GB in 1U using 200GB drives.
